35cm of snow fell in Kutchan on March 24, 2015, equaling the largest single day snowfall in the area in the last 10 years, according to records kept by the Japan Meteorological Agency. Grand Hirafu-based 360niseko.com recorded a total of 40.5cm for the same day.
The last time the area received a heavier single day snowfall in March was in 2005, when almost 100cm fell on the first two days of the month.
The record Niseko March, which has received 158cm of snow to date, has come in a year where many North American resorts have struggled for snow, a number even shutting operations early for the season. Photos showing muddy Lake Tahoe ski slopes emerged earlier in the week, heavily affected by the warmest Californian winter on record.
Sunny skies and warmer temperatures are forecast for the rest of the week in Niseko, which will make for some very pleasant spring skiing conditions. A bit more like the March weather you would expect!
